The Danger of Distance: Don't Let Space Come Between You and God

One Word That Convicted a Pastor

Pastor Chris woke up Sunday morning with nothing — no sermon, no outline, no direction. But God dropped one single word into his spirit: distance. Not "blessing." Not "provision." Not "peace." Just distance. And the moment that word landed, it brought immediate conviction.

That's worth pausing on. God didn't give a comfortable word. He gave a necessary one. And if you're honest with yourself today, you might feel that same conviction stirring right now.

What Distance Actually Does to You

Distance, in its simplest form, is the space between two things. And spiritually speaking, it's the space that slowly grows between you and God — often without you even noticing.

Think about this: Pastor Chris shared a story about his wife driving home from camp meeting. She had missed a turn somewhere, and everything still looked right. The interstate looked like an interstate. The buildings looked like buildings. The grass looked like grass. She had no idea she was headed the wrong direction — until someone on the outside could see it.

That's exactly what spiritual distance does to you. Life keeps looking normal. You still go to work. You still show up to church. But somewhere along the way, you missed a turn. And now:

  • The Bible that used to be in your hands every day is sitting on your desk untouched

  • The prayers that used to flow freely have been reduced to maybe once a week

  • The people you used to love so deeply in the church feel further away than ever

Nothing dramatic happened. Distance just quietly moved in.

You Used to Believe God for Anything

Pastor Chris made a point that should stop you in your tracks. There are people sitting in church right now who used to believe God for anything. You'd go to bed trusting Him. You'd go to work trusting Him. You could stand on His promises without flinching.

But somewhere — through a trial, a test, a struggle — it got harder. And now believing God for the things you once believed Him for feels like a mountain instead of a step.

Here's the truth Pastor Chris brought from God's Word: God said, "I am God, and I change not." He didn't move. You did. The distance crept in, and it robbed you of the faith you once carried so naturally.

What Israel Teaches Us About Distance

The children of Israel are a mirror for all of us. Out in the wilderness, they complained. They wanted something better. They even wanted to go back into slavery. And Jeremiah 2:13 captures exactly what God said about it:

"For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water."

Israel thought they could make it on their own. They thought they'd found something better than God. But broken cisterns can't hold water — and nothing you fill your life with outside of God will sustain you either.

Pastor Chris put it plainly: You cannot have God without God. You can call it whatever you want. You can dress it up however you like. But without Him, it won't hold.

John 15:5 says it just as clearly: "Without me, you can do nothing."

Distance Is a Robber — But You Can Close the Gap

The enemy doesn't need to take you out dramatically. He just needs to put a little space between you and God, then let time do the rest. Slowly your prayer life shrinks. Slowly your hunger fades. Slowly the things of God that once felt urgent start feeling optional.

But here's what Pastor Chris wants you to hear today: God is not speaking this to you because He's angry. He's speaking it because He loves you. He loves you enough to find you in the middle of your drift and call you back.

This is not the hour to fall away. This is the hour to draw closer to God than you have ever been.

So ask yourself honestly: - Is there distance between you and God right now? - When did you last open your Bible with hunger? - When did you last pray with urgency, not just routine? - Is there something — a job, a habit, a comfort, a hurt — that has slowly pulled you away?

Don't dodge the question. Don't tell yourself you're fine when you're not. Go to God and be real. He already knows where you stand. He's just waiting for you to come back to the front of the line.

Close the Gap Today

There is no substitute for living close to God. You can't find it in a book, a bottle, or a better routine. You have to go to Him. And the decision is yours.

If distance has crept into your relationship with God, today is the day to close that gap. Pray with urgency. Tell Him the truth. Say, "God, I don't want anything between me and You — not my job, not my hobbies, not my comfort, not my fear."

Don't let what He's done for you become a distant memory. Stay close. Draw near. And watch what God does when the space disappears.
